Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)The Congo, now striving to recover from a five-year war where an estimated three million lives were lost, mainly through starvation and disease, is being viewed as possibly the worst emergency to unfold in Africa in recent decades.
Background
In November 2004, having successfully accomplished her goal of becoming a world class athletic, Mwadi was constantly mindful of the many mother, sister, and child victims of sexual violence and rape and wanted to do more to turn things around for them. The practice of this
widespread sexual violence, which began as a weapon of war, is a malady that has severely damaged and taken the lives of tens of thousands of women and children (most have been unreported), and unfortunately continues to prevail.
The Mwadi Mabika Foundation is an expansion of Mwadi’s focus and desire to help these victims: the women and children “back home”, to gather and re-claim themselves. The Foundation was established to provide safe havens for women and children to heal mind, body, and spirit; and to support and develop pro-grams that teach new skills that enable them to build sustaining, enriched, and meaningful lives, many for the first time.
